Montana has adult-use and medical cannabis. Adults 21 and older may possess a limited personal amount and grow a secured home crop. Adult-use dispensaries operate only in green counties, while red counties remain medical-sales-only. A statewide moratorium prevents new business premises through June 30, 2027.
A person 21 or older or a registered cardholder may possess up to one ounce of usable marijuana, including no more than eight grams of concentrate and 800 milligrams of THC in solid edible products. Home-grown marijuana above one ounce must be kept in a locked space at the residence.
An adult may grow up to two mature plants and two seedlings at a private residence. A registered medical cardholder may grow four mature plants and four seedlings. A household may have no more than twice the applicable individual amount. Plants and excess product must be locked and not visible by normal unaided vision from a public place.
Home cultivation is limited to the registered patient, caregiver, or provider groups described above. Being an adult by itself does not authorize a grow in Montana; the person cultivating must fit the medical-program rule and follow its plant-count, residence, security, and authorization limits.
